A step-by-step guide for making edible paint
Lustre dust is one of the easiest ways to add a luxury finish to cakes, cookies, and decorations. Whether you want a soft shimmer or bold metallic details, the key is how you mix and apply it.
Below is a simple guide to using lustre dust with alcohol, rejuvenator spirit, lemon juice, or water — and when to use each.
What You’ll Need
• Lustre Dust (we have lots of different colours for you to choose from!)
• Small mixing palette or dish
• Fine food-safe paintbrush
• Liquid of choice (see below)
• Paper towel (to control excess liquid)
Option 1: Mixing Lustre Dust with Alcohol (Best for Price)
Best for:
Metallic finishes, sharp details, fast drying
Recommended alcohol:
• Clear food-grade alcohol (vodka or similar)
Note: This option is not suitable for everyone — some people avoid alcohol for religious, dietary, or personal reasons.
Steps:
Add a small amount of lustre dust to your palette (a pinch is plenty).
Dip the tip of your brush into alcohol.
-
Mix until it becomes a smooth, paint-like consistency.
Add more alcohol for lighter coverage
Add more dust for bolder colour
Paint onto dry fondant, sugar paste, modelling paste, chocolate, or decorations.
Allow to dry — alcohol evaporates quickly, leaving a smooth, streak-free finish.
✅ Why this works well: Alcohol evaporates fast, giving strong colour and shine with minimal streaking.
Option 2: Mixing with Rejuvenator Spirit (Best for a Professional Finish)
Best for:
Cakes, toppers, plaques, intricate lettering
Steps:
Place lustre dust into a dish.
Add a few drops of rejuvenator spirit (also called Dipping Solution).
Mix into a thin paint consistency.
Apply with light brush strokes, building colour gradually.
Let dry completely before handling.
✨ Rejuvenator spirit is specifically designed for cake decorating and gives excellent control and shine.
Option 3: Mixing with Lemon Juice (Good Alternative)
Best for:
If alcohol isn’t available or is not suitable for the customer
Steps:
Add lustre dust to your palette.
Mix with a few drops of lemon juice.
Paint gently onto your decoration.
Allow extra drying time.
⚠️ Note: Lemon juice dries slower than alcohol and may slightly dull the finish compared to rejuvenator spirit.
Option 4: Mixing with Water (Use with Care)
Best for:
Soft shimmer, subtle colour
Steps:
Mix lustre dust with a very small amount of water.
Apply lightly using minimal brush strokes.
Let dry fully before adding more layers.
⚠️ Water can:
• Reduce shine
• Cause streaking
• Activate sugar underneath if too wet
Use sparingly and only when other liquids aren’t available.
Option 5: Dry Dusting (No Liquid)
Best for:
Soft glow, highlighting texture
Steps:
Dip a dry brush into lustre dust.
Tap off excess.
Gently brush over raised details or textured areas.
This works beautifully on embossed designs, stencils, and moulds.
Top Tips for Best Results
✨ Always apply lustre to a completely dry surface
✨ Use light layers rather than one heavy coat
✨ Clean brushes between colours
✨ Test on a spare piece first
✨ Store lustre dust away from moisture
For the most professional results, rejuvenator spirit or alcohol is always recommended. Water and lemon juice will work, but they won’t give the same intensity or shine.
Used correctly, lustre dust can instantly elevate cakes from simple to stunning ✨
