Two-Tone Fondant Cookies: A Growing Decorating Trend

We’ve teamed up with the talented Claire Amos to guide you through the art of making beautiful two-tone fondant cookies.

Two-tone decorating is a growing trend in the cake and cookie world, loved for the clean, modern finish it creates and the endless colour combinations you can play with. While it can feel a little tricky at first, it’s absolutely doable — and like most decorating skills, it gets easier (and more fun!) the more you practise.

With the right approach and a few expert tips, you’ll be surprised at how achievable it really is. Claire is sharing her four top tips to help you master the technique, avoid common pitfalls, and create perfectly polished two-tone cookies every time.

Whether you’re a beginner looking to try something new or an experienced baker wanting to refine your skills, these tips will set you up for success and give your bakes that wow-factor finish.

Tip 1: Take a Gentle Approach

A soft, patient touch really makes a difference to the finished look. There’s no need to rush pushing the fondant into the gaps — forcing it can tear your design. Take your time, press gently, and you’ll see a cleaner, sharper result.

Tip 2: Plan Your Design

Not every part of your cookie needs to be two-toned, and some designs work better than others. Spend a few moments planning which sections will be coloured. For example, the LissieLou Envelope of Hearts stamp works particularly well for this technique, giving you clear sections to play with.

Tip 3: Use the Right Tools

Having the right tools makes everything easier. Claire recommends:

  1. A LissieLou mini metal scraper — perfect for smoothing and cleaning edges.

  2. Your fingers — the best tool for delicate shaping and pressing fondant into smaller areas.

Tip 4: Don’t Overfill

Less is more when it comes to filling your sections. Overfilling can cause fondant to spill into other areas of the stamp or over the edges. It takes a little practice to get the perfect amount, but once you do, your two-tone design will look crisp and professional.
